SmartKem Ltd, as part of its duties as expert member of the IEC TC 119 (Technical Committee 119) responsible for defining the standards for printed electronics, attended the 5th Plenary in Santa Clara in November 2015. Dr Mike Cowin, SmartKem’s Head of Strategic Marketing, in his capacity as expert member of Working Group 2, defining the standards for ‘materials’ found the meeting very worthwhile; “It’s great to very to see such a large attendance at our meetings and great representation from all the key geographic players in the field of printed electronics and displays”. Amongst others, there was significant representation from S Korea, Japan, Taiwan, USA, Germany and the UK.
Steve Kelly, SmartKem CEO, supports the IEC process fully; “I think the comprehensive effort and progress in the final definition of the standards for solution coat semiconductors is a firm indicator of the traction that printed electronics is gained in adoption; especially from SmartKem’s perspective with applications for our tru-FLEX® semiconductor platform in the manufacture of flexible and conformable AMOLED and AMLCD displays”.
The UK delegation is involved in a number of key working groups with the Technical Committee one of which is Materials. Mike Cowin thinks it’s a great fit for the UK and the EU in general which has a significant heritage in the chemical industry and quite a number of companies with great material- based technologies for conductive, semiconductor and organic light emitting materials for next generation flexible electronic and display applications. Cowin believes that involvement in the IEC standardisation process is crucial in refining their product offering; “critical electronic and process performance requirements are defined by this collective standardisation process, this allows all involved, including SmartKem, to refine their product offering to meet and keep ahead of the markets needs’’.
